ALENA NOÌR
Le Carnet Noir

Some women keep diaries. I keep a carnet.
Some pages belong to cities. The best ones belong to people.
You weren't supposed to find it.
But since you're here, turn the page.

I. ALENA
Who keeps this carnet

I'm Alena. I have a weakness for old theatres, beautiful dresses, and evenings that refuse to follow the usual script.I love opera for its glorious lack of restraint. Three hours of people saying exactly what they feel. In real life, the most interesting things are often said more quietly.I laugh easily, I dress slowly, and my phone never comes to the table.I notice small things. A choice made without thinking. The story behind a favourite place. The moment someone stops trying to impress and simply becomes themselves.Pilates every morning, wherever I wake up. Opinions every evening, preferably over good wine.I love beautiful surroundings. But I've never mistaken the setting for the evening. The most memorable part is usually what happens between two people.— A.

Some things are better remembered than described.Flowers
White peonies. Never too many.
II. Milan
Before the curtain

Milan knows how to make an entrance. At La Scala, even the minutes before the curtain feel theatrical.I love that anticipation. The music that hasn't started, the lights slowly dimming, the feeling that anything could happen. Then the performance begins, and for a while the world belongs to the stage. At the interval, I'm always curious about the person beside me. Did we notice the same thing? Or did we see it completely differently?Perhaps you'll love the performance. Perhaps we'll disagree about it over a glass of wine afterward. The evening may begin at La Scala.
That doesn't mean the best part will happen on stage.
III. Paris
Rue Cambon, late afternoon

Paris is full of grand entrances. I've always preferred the quieter ones.I like arriving from Rue Cambon, when the late afternoon light softens the city.At the Hemingway, champagne is usually my first choice. Though the interesting part has never been what's in the glass.Perhaps we'll begin with the ordinary questions. Where we've been. What brought us here. And then, somewhere between the first glass and the second, we might find ourselves talking about something neither of us expected.Paris has enough beautiful things to look at.
I'd rather discover something I didn't know about you.
IV. London
Mayfair, 21:30. Raining.

London is at its best in the rain. The streets empty, the lights become softer, and the bars fill with people in no particular hurry to leave.I have a weakness for quick wit. Especially when someone can laugh at their own argument. If you can make me laugh halfway through a serious conversation, we'll get along dangerously well.Outside, the rain hasn't stopped.
Inside, nobody has asked for the bill.
V. Elsewhere
Somewhere on the coast. Early afternoon.

Some of my favourite pages have no city written at the top.A long lunch. The shutters half closed. Sunlight moving slowly across the table.Perhaps we had plans. Perhaps we've already forgotten them.Geneva for the quiet. Zurich for its understated elegance. The coast for the pleasure of having nowhere urgent to be.I like discovering how people are when the schedule disappears.I'd be curious to know what you'd choose.
VI. The Ritual
Some things are worth keeping

My carnet isn't a collection of perfect evenings. It's where I keep the details that might otherwise disappear.A sentence that made me laugh. A wine that suited the moment.Occasionally, I write a page by hand and give it away.If one ever finds its way into your hands, it will have been written for that evening alone. The rest is written in person.
